3 Unique Accommodation Options In Tokyo

by Don Grant

Tokyo, the capital city of Japan, is a must-visit destination, and for people in Australia, the city is extremely easy to get to with many direct flights connecting to major Australian cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. As when you travel to any new destination, it can be a great idea to undertake some research about Tokyo before visiting so you know the lay of the land. It's particularly important to understand the accommodation options in this city because there are many options outside of booking a hotel online. Here are three accommodation options that are unique to Tokyo that you might want to try out.

Ryokans and Minshukus. A Ryokan is essentially a traditional Japanese Inn, and a Minshuku is a more basic family run version of this. Sleeping arrangements will be simple, but you will be experiencing the real Japan. Think a tatami mat on a futon, which is then put away in the day to enhance the sense of space in the room. In terms of furniture, you might have a low table on which you can drink green tea. And if you are lucky, you will have sliding doors that open out on to an expanse of garden space. While the experience will be authentic, this experience can also be expensive, but it is worth trying out for at least one night on a trip to Tokyo.

Capsule hotels. This one is strictly for the guys out there because most capsule hotels only accept male guests. Capsule hotels do exactly what they say on the tin – you are given a very small capsule space that might have a television attached to the wall, and that's it. These are mostly designed for business travellers who need a simple bed for the night with no frills. There will be probably be WiFi, but good luck getting any work done in the small environment of your private capsule. Still, this is an economic option and something unique to Tokyo and Japan that is worth trying out, if only for a night.

Love Hotels. Staying in a Love Hotel, essentially a place where two people go to hook up, might sound sleazy, but Love Hotels are actually nicer than you probably think they are. They are clean, and the rooms will often have fun themes that can make for a unique experience. And while it is more common to book Love Hotels by the hour, you will actually receive a better rate for an overnight stay.
